A signature
file is used by webmasters and non-webmasters alike.
Use your signature in
forums, articles, ebooks that you publish, outgoing emails,
IM away messages. Your signature line should be a catchy CTA
(Call to Action) that tells what you do and includes your website URL.
It could be a simple USP
and HOOK as in this example, followed by your
URL.
Your signature file
consists of 2 or 3 lines that you set your email program to automatically
insert at the bottom of all your emails that you send. You can put
anything there that you wish, but you might as well use this space for
subtle promotion. Create a catchy USP
and HOOK, and include your URL to your lead capture page.
Many forums allow you
to create a signature file that is automatically inserted at the bottom
of each post you make. This very good for getting inbound links to
your website, as well as getting prospects to click your forum link to
visit your website. This is especially true if you are a frequent
poster on the forum.
When your signature appears at the bottom of an article you submit, it is called a "Resource Box." In this case you cannot directly try to sell, but you could include your name, something that qualifies you on the subject, and your URL. See this example HERE of a Resource Box signature, which I used at the bottom of this article I wrote for submission. An often-overlooked item is the guest book. If a related high-PR website has a guest book, be sure to sign their guest book and include your signature file. Your link back in your signature file will count as an inbound link from their website. This is great SEO.
