First Steps

DEFINITIONS to terms and abbreviations used on this page are HERE.

Submit your website to directories.
Submit to private directories.  Submit to DMOZ, but also google HERE and HERE for starters, and find the private niche directories which abound on the internet.  Some directories will link to you if your site is relevant, but others will also want a link back to their site.

There is a difference between search engines and directories.
Unlike search engines which display websites based on keyword searches, directories list websites according to the site category.  You can submit your website to both general directories and to niche directories which are focused to a certain category (such as MLM marketing business opportunities).  Yahoo is a general directory, although it is so large it functions much like a search engine and is powered by the Inktomi directory engine.  If you SEO your site well, Yahoo will find and index it.

(PR 5) Atoomic is one directory from which I have received very good response.

(PR 3) InfoVileSilencer is a site which lists directories by niche and PR.

(PR 3) Directory Critic is a site which lists general and niche directories and PR.

Organize and save time.
Most of the directories will ask the same information of you - your URL, category, name of your site, description, some keywords or phrases, etc.  So as you are filling out this information for the first directory, copy and paste this information to a program such as Notepad (start....programs......accessories......notepad).  Save this as a .txt file on your hard drive in a place where you can find it later.

Choose your directories.
Show preferrence to directories with highPR.  Favor those that are focused to your niche, but don't overlook the general directories that have high PR.  Try to get inbound links as opposed to reciprocal link exchanging.  Do not submit to a directory which uses the "robots no follow" tag.  A link from a directory that uses that tag will do you no good at all, because the search engine spiders will not follow the link to your site.

Does the directory use the "no follow" tag?
If it does, then do not submit to the directory.  To see if it does, click the view link on your browser menu.  On the popup menu, click on page source.  On the page that appears, use the ctrl+f keys and type in no follow then enter key to see if that tag exists on the directory page.

Free stuff directories
If the front end item of your funded proposal includes a freebie, don't forget to submit the URL that has the freebie.  Search for freebie directories.  Many of them even allow you to submit items that are "free trial" but will cost later if kept beyond the trial or if upgraded to pay status.

Monitor your traffic.
Some directories you try will bring you a fair amount of visitors; some will bring you no traffic.  Check your website stats counter often, and be sure to remove any links to directories which are not producing visitors to your website.  Two good free website stat trackers which I have used for several years are Sitemeter and Extreme.
